³pick the best and most capable^[a] of your master’s sons, place him on his father’s throne, and defend^[b] your master’s dynasty.”

⁴They were absolutely terrified^[c] and said, “Look, two kings could not stop him!^[d] How can we?”^[e] ⁵So the palace supervisor,^[f] the city commissioner,^[g] the leaders,^[h] and the guardians sent this message to Jehu, “We are your subjects!^[i] Whatever you say, we will do. We will not make anyone king. Do what you consider proper.”^[j]
